Church & Community

I want to start going to church and I honestly have no idea where to begin. Do I just walk into a building on a Sunday?

Old TestamentPsalm 122:1

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

Psalm 122 is a pilgrim song, sung by ordinary Israelites on the roads up to Jerusalem for the festivals. The journey was long and inconvenient, and they sang anyway. What the psalm captures is not duty but anticipation, the gladness of people who had decided the gathering was worth the walk. If you are starting from zero, that gladness usually grows over time rather than arriving on your first Sunday.

New TestamentLuke 4:16

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Luke pauses in his account of Jesus' early ministry to note something plain: going to the synagogue on the sabbath was a habit Jesus had formed long before any of the ministry began. He was not there because the teaching was excellent or the welcome warm. He was there because that was where his people gathered. Habit does a great deal of the work motivation cannot, especially at the start.

A path forward

  1. Pick one church within fifteen minutes of where you live and go this Sunday. Sit near the back, plan to leave straight afterwards if you want to, and decide nothing about the place until you have been three times.

  2. Before you go, pray one honest sentence: that you would meet God there and recognize somewhere you could belong. Naming what you actually hope for makes the visit feel less like an inspection.

  3. Ask one person on your way out what time things usually finish and whether anything happens midweek. It is a low risk question that gives somebody a reason to talk to you.

Closing verse

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

- Psalm 84:10
