Family & Parenting
I grew up in a dysfunctional family and I'm terrified of repeating those patterns with my own kids.
“The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”
Ezekiel is correcting a fatalistic belief that had taken root in Israel: that families were simply destined to repeat the sins of their forebears. God flatly contradicts this. Generational patterns are real, but they are not destiny. The invitation in this passage is to personal responsibility and the genuine possibility of a different path.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Paul's declaration is not that your history disappears but that it no longer holds the same power. Being a new creation means the patterns of your family of origin are not your inevitable future. The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is the same Spirit working in you: resurrection applies to patterns as well as to the ultimate question of death.
A path forward
Name specifically the patterns you are afraid of repeating. Vague fear is harder to address than a concrete one. Writing them down also begins the process of separating 'what I grew up in' from 'who I am choosing to be.'
Work with a therapist, especially one familiar with family systems and intergenerational trauma. The insight and tools you gain there are some of the most direct investments you can make in breaking the cycle.
Build in one regular practice that was absent in your childhood: consistent meals together, bedtime rituals, predictable affection. Small repeated acts of stability have an outsized effect on children.
Closing verse
“That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:”
- Psalm 78:6-7
