Family & Parenting
My parents are aging and need more care than I can give. I feel overwhelmed and guilty.
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.”
Honoring aging parents is one of the few commandments that comes with a direct promise, suggesting its importance is not merely moral but structural to how communities and families flourish. Importantly, the command is to honor, not to do everything yourself. Honor can look like coordinating care, ensuring dignity, and being present; it is not the same as unlimited personal caregiving capacity.
“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
Paul's point is that faith is not abstract; it has practical implications for how we treat the people closest to us. But 'provide for' does not mean 'do everything alone.' The early church community was meant to carry these burdens together. Asking for help is not failing your parents; it is building the team they need.
A path forward
Make a list of what your parents actually need and what you can realistically provide, then identify the gap. The guilt often comes from comparing what you are doing to an imaginary standard of 'enough,' not to what is actually possible.
Have a direct conversation with siblings or other family members about sharing the load. Many caregiving situations collapse because the person closest does everything alone while others remain unaware of the weight.
Research local elder care resources, church support networks, or professional options. Knowing what exists changes the feeling of trapped limitation; even if you do not use everything available, knowing it is there helps.
Closing verse
“Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.”
- Proverbs 23:22
