Fear & Anxiety
I'm terrified of what people think of me. How do I stop needing everyone's approval?
“The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?”
The psalmist had faced real enemies, not just social embarrassment but genuine threats. Yet his conclusion is that God's opinion of him outweighs every human judgment. Fear of man shrinks when you recognize that the one who made you is also the one who defines your worth.
“For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”
Paul wrote this after being criticized by other Christians who wanted him to soften his message. He had learned, through genuine suffering, that chasing human approval is a trap with no exit. Serving Christ means accepting that some people will always disapprove, and making peace with that.
A path forward
Before any significant decision this week, ask yourself two questions: 'What am I afraid people will think?' and 'What does God actually say about this?' Writing both answers down makes the contrast visible.
Deliberately do one small thing that you know is right but that you have been avoiding because of what someone might think.
Find one trusted person who consistently tells you the truth rather than what you want to hear, and make them a regular voice in your decisions.
Closing verse
“The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.”
- Proverbs 29:25
