Fear & Anxiety

I'm afraid of getting sick or dying. How do I live with that fear without it consuming me?

Old TestamentPsalm 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

David wrote this psalm knowing that real danger exists: the 'valley of the shadow of death' was a literal place, a dark ravine where predators hid. He is not pretending death is not real. He is saying that God's presence changes how we move through frightening terrain.

New TestamentRomans 8:38-39

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Paul wrote Romans from a position of personal risk; he had already faced death multiple times. His confidence about death is not wishful thinking but hard-won conviction. For him, death is not a period at the end of the story but a doorway into fuller life with God.

A path forward

  1. When fear of death or illness spikes, ground yourself in the present by naming five things you are grateful for right now. Anxiety about death lives in the future; gratitude pulls you back to today.

  2. If physical health anxiety is severe, schedule the doctor's appointment you have been avoiding. Concrete action reduces the power of the unknown.

  3. Spend ten minutes reading about a Christian who faced death with peace (Corrie ten Boom, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, or a saint from your tradition). Seeing it modeled makes it feel possible.

Closing verse

For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

- Philippians 1:21
