Fear & Anxiety

My small group prays out loud and I freeze every time it comes around to me. I want to pray but the fear of sounding stupid takes over. How do I get past it?

Old TestamentJeremiah 1:6-8

Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

Jeremiah's first response to his calling is that he cannot speak, that he is only a child. He is not being modest. He is genuinely young and about to be sent to confront kings. God does not argue with his assessment of his own eloquence, and does not promise he will feel confident. What is promised is company: do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you.

New TestamentRomans 8:26

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Paul tells a church living under real pressure that we do not know what to pray for as we ought, and then makes an extraordinary claim: the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be put into words. The gap between what you mean and what comes out of your mouth is not a problem God is waiting for you to solve. It is already being covered from the other side.

A path forward

  1. Prepare one short sentence in advance and pray exactly that when it comes to you. Nobody in the room is grading it, and a prepared sentence beats a paralysed silence.

  2. Pray out loud when you are alone in the car or the kitchen this week. Most of the fear is unfamiliarity with the sound of your own voice praying.

  3. Tell your group leader privately that this is hard for you. Good leaders will stop putting you on the spot and start making room for you instead.

Closing verse

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

- Psalm 145:18
