Grief & Loss

I'm grieving a miscarriage and feel like no one understands the depth of this loss.

Old TestamentPsalm 139:13-16

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

The psalmist is speaking of his own formation, but the theology is clear: every life conceived is known by God from the very beginning. A miscarriage is not a non-event in God's eyes. The child who was lost was seen and known by the one who made them, and that fact matters enormously to grieving parents.

New TestamentMatthew 5:4

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Jesus says mourning is not a spiritual failure but a state that puts you in line for something: comfort. He does not say 'blessed are those who hide their grief' or 'blessed are those who move on quickly.' He honors the mourner. The promise of comfort is not immediate, but it is real.

A path forward

  1. Name the loss directly. Your child had a name in God's mind even if you never gave them one. Many couples find it meaningful to choose a name for the baby they lost, not as denial but as honoring a real life.

  2. Find another person or couple who has experienced miscarriage. This loss is far more common than people speak about, and connection with someone who truly understands changes the experience of carrying it.

  3. Be honest with your partner about how you are each grieving. Men and women often grieve miscarriage very differently, and the disconnection can feel like abandonment when it is actually a different grief language.

Closing verse

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

- Isaiah 40:11
