Identity & Worth
I was told my whole life I was not smart or talented enough. How do I break free from that?
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”
God says this to Jeremiah before Jeremiah can offer any objection about his qualifications. The appointment was specific (Jeremiah was called as a prophet to the nations), but the order of events reveals a pattern that runs through Scripture: God's knowing came before Jeremiah's birth, before anyone else had the chance to define him. Whatever was said about you in childhood, God's knowledge of you came first: Psalm 139 says every person is formed and known by him from the womb.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
The Greek word Paul uses here, poiema, is where we get the word 'poem.' You are not a production error or a rough draft. You are a piece of intentional creative work from the hand of someone who makes no mistakes. The 'good works prepared in advance' means there are things in the world that only you can do in the way you can do them.
A path forward
Identify the specific person or voice that planted the 'not enough' belief, and name it as coming from a limited, flawed human rather than from the one who actually made you.
Find one area where you have grown or learned something difficult as an adult. Proof that the old verdict was wrong does not need to be dramatic; it just needs to be real.
Work through this with a counselor if the messages go deep. Beliefs installed in childhood take more than good intentions to dislodge. Professional help is not a sign that your faith is insufficient.
Closing verse
“For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.”
- Psalm 8:5
