Identity & Worth
My whole identity was wrapped up in being a parent, and now my kids are grown. Who am I now?
“And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.”
God is speaking to a people who are facing a major transition: the end of an era they had built their lives around. His word is not 'figure out who you are now' but 'I have been your God through every season and I still am.' Identity in God does not require a productive role to sustain it.
“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”
Paul locates the believer's identity somewhere that no life transition can reach: hidden with Christ. This is not poetic consolation; it is a structural claim about where your real self is anchored. Seasons change, roles end, children leave. The identity that is hidden in Christ is not disrupted by any of those things.
A path forward
Make a list of things you were interested in or called to before you had children: passions that were shelved. This transition is often the first real opportunity to return to them.
Resist filling the space immediately with busyness. The discomfort of the empty nest is an invitation to ask God who you are apart from the role. Sit with that question in prayer this month and write down what surfaces.
Invest in your marriage or your friendships in this season with the energy you previously gave to parenting. Those relationships may need rebuilding after years of being secondary.
Closing verse
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- Romans 8:38-39
