Money & Finances

I have some money set aside and people keep telling me to invest it. Is putting money into the markets any different from gambling with it?

Old TestamentEcclesiastes 11:1-2

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

Ecclesiastes is written by a man who has watched every certainty come apart in his hands, and this passage is his advice on risk. Spread what you have across several ventures, he says, because you cannot know which one will fail. It is ancient portfolio thinking, offered by someone with no illusions of control. Acting sensibly under genuine uncertainty is not faithlessness; it is what wisdom looks like.

New TestamentLuke 19:13

And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.

Jesus tells this parable near Jerusalem, to people expecting the kingdom to arrive immediately. A nobleman leaves money with his servants and tells them to put it to work until he returns. The servant condemned at the end of the story is the one who took no risk at all and simply kept the money safe in a cloth. Passive preservation is not the neutral option it feels like.

A path forward

  1. Clear high interest debt and build a basic emergency fund before you invest anything. Paying twenty percent interest while chasing seven percent returns is not stewardship.

  2. Start with boring, diversified, low cost funds you could explain to a friend in one sentence, and ignore anything promising unusual returns quickly.

  3. Decide before you invest what proportion of any growth you will give away, and commit that to God in prayer now. Settling generosity in advance is far easier than settling it once the money is real.

Closing verse

Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

- Proverbs 16:3
