Purpose & Calling

I don't know what my life is supposed to be about. How do I find my purpose?

Old TestamentJeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

God said this to the Israelites while they were in exile in Babylon, one of the lowest, most purposeless seasons in their history. The promise was spoken to a whole community, and its fulfillment took seventy years, so it is not a private guarantee of a smooth individual path. What it reveals is God's character: he plans ahead for his people even in seasons that feel like the plan has failed. Purpose is not something we manufacture but something we discover as we trust the one who has already thought it through.

New TestamentRomans 12:6-8

Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.

Paul grounds purpose in something concrete: the gifts already present in you. Rather than searching for a cosmic sign, he points to what you already do well, and says that is where you should put your energy. Purpose is often discovered by paying attention to what you are naturally and joyfully drawn toward.

A path forward

  1. Ask three people who know you well to name one thing they think you do unusually well. The overlap in their answers often points toward a genuine gift you may have normalized.

  2. Think about the last time you lost track of time because you were so absorbed in something. What were you doing? Engagement like that is a clue worth following.

  3. Try one new area of service or skill in the next 30 days. Purpose is rarely found by thinking about it and more often found by doing things and noticing what comes alive.

Closing verse

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

- Ephesians 2:10
