Purpose & Calling
I think God might be calling me into ministry or missions but I'm scared to leave my stable life.
“And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt? And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.”
Moses's objection was essentially about inadequacy: he did not think he was the right person. God's response is striking because it does not address the objection at all. He does not say 'You are more capable than you think.' He says 'My presence with you is what makes this possible.' That is a completely different kind of confidence.
“As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.”
Paul's call to mission came through community and prayer, not a solo revelation. The church confirmed what God was already stirring. If you feel a calling toward ministry or missions, the pattern of Scripture suggests testing it with a community of people who know you and can pray with you, not just deciding in isolation.
A path forward
Share the sense of calling with two or three people in your church community who will pray honestly with you. A calling that holds up under community discernment tends to be genuine.
Volunteer in a ministry or mission context before making any major life change. Serving in a limited capacity will quickly reveal whether the reality matches the pull.
Make a list of what 'stability' actually means to you. Sometimes what feels like wisdom is actually fear, and sometimes it is genuine wisdom. Writing it down helps you tell the difference.
Closing verse
“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.”
- Isaiah 6:8
