Purpose & Calling
I keep asking God what he wants for my life and getting nothing back. Should I be this anxious about getting it right?
“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Micah prophesied to Judah while the nation piled up religious activity and ignored justice. People kept asking what larger offering would finally satisfy God, escalating from calves to their own children. Micah's answer cuts through that anxiety by naming something plain and immediate rather than hidden. For anyone convinced God's will is a secret they keep failing to guess, the reframing is a genuine relief.
“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
Paul wrote to a young church in Thessalonica that he had been forced to leave in a hurry, a congregation under social pressure and unsure what faithfulness looked like day to day. Rather than handing them a map of their futures, he names habits they could begin practising that same evening. Paul treats God's will as something you live inside, not a destination you must locate first.
A path forward
Write out the decision you think you are waiting on, then underneath it list what you already know God asks of you regardless of how it turns out. Most of that second list can start this week.
Set aside fifteen minutes on three mornings this week to read a chapter of a gospel before you pray, so your praying begins with who God is rather than with your unanswered question.
Tell one mature Christian that you feel stuck, and ask them to describe how direction actually came for them. Real stories deflate the myth that everyone else received a clear announcement.
Closing verse
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
- Psalm 119:105
