My six-year-old told me she asked Jesus into her heart. I do not want to squash it, and I cannot tell whether a child that young can really mean it.

“And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.”

Samuel was a boy working in the sanctuary, young enough that he mistook God's voice for the old priest calling him, three times over. Nobody in the story treats his age as a disqualification, though he clearly needed an adult to help him recognize what was happening. Eli's contribution is small and crucial: he tells the child what to say. That is roughly the job description in front of you.

“But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

The disciples were turning children away, presumably to protect Jesus from an undignified crowd, and it is one of the few moments the Gospels record him as visibly annoyed. He not only lets the children through, he makes them the picture of how anyone at all enters. Childlike faith in this passage is not a lesser version of the real thing. It is the model for everyone else.
