Suffering & Hardship
Nothing catastrophic has happened. Life is just relentlessly hard and I am tired in a way that sleep does not fix.
“And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.”
Moses brings the Israelites the best news of their lives, that God has heard them and will bring them out, and they cannot take it in. The text says they did not listen because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage. Scripture records, without a word of blame, that unrelenting hardship can flatten a person's capacity to receive even good news. Exhaustion is not the same thing as unbelief.
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Jesus offers a yoke, which sounds like a strange comfort until you remember that a yoke was built for two animals to share a load between them. He is not offering the removal of work. He is offering to be harnessed alongside you, and he describes that arrangement as light by comparison with whatever you have been pulling on your own.
A path forward
Find the one recurring drain in your week and change something about it, even slightly. Grinding tiredness usually has three or four specific sources rather than being general.
Guard one full evening or afternoon each week and treat it as fixed. Sabbath was commanded to people who had every practical reason to say they could not spare the time.
Talk to your doctor if the tiredness has lasted for months. Persistent exhaustion is frequently physical, and treating it as a purely spiritual problem only delays real help.
Closing verse
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.”
- Psalm 23:2-3
