Temptation

I'm struggling with pornography and feel like God could never forgive or help me with this.

Old TestamentJob 31:1

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

Job made this covenant proactively, not after being caught but as a deliberate, pre-committed act of integrity. The wisdom is in the choice made before the temptation rather than in the moment of it. Covenant-level commitments change the architecture of decision-making.

New TestamentRomans 6:12-14

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Paul's framing is about authority, not just behavior. The reason to fight this is not shame but a new identity: sin is no longer your master. The battle is real, but it is not fought from a position of hopelessness. You are fighting from the side that has already won in principle.

A path forward

  1. Install a content filter on every device you own today. Removing access is not a replacement for heart change, but removing friction is a legitimate and effective strategy for making the good choice easier.

  2. Tell one person, ideally someone in your church or a therapist, what you are dealing with, in specific terms. Pornography addiction thrives in secrecy, and secrecy is the first thing that needs to go.

  3. Find an accountability partner or group, not someone who will shame you when you fail, but someone who will check in consistently and celebrate honest progress. Recovery from this pattern takes community.

Closing verse

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

- 1 John 1:9
