Temptation
I drink too much. I've tried to stop and can't. Is this a spiritual problem or a medical one?
“Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.”
Proverbs does not categorize alcohol as inherently evil but recognizes with unflinching honesty that it can take over a person's judgment and behavior. The ancient world understood addiction as a form of being led astray: pulled in a direction you did not fully choose. The Bible speaks into this without either condemning the substance or minimizing the danger.
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”
Paul makes an interesting comparison: both alcohol and the Spirit offer a kind of release or altered state. The problem with alcohol is not the longing underneath it (for relief, for joy, for connection) but the source. Whatever alcohol is providing, the Spirit is capable of providing more truly and without damage.
A path forward
See a doctor. Alcohol dependence has a physiological component, and withdrawal can be medically dangerous. Treating this as a purely spiritual problem can actually put you at physical risk. Both dimensions are real.
Tell your doctor, a pastor, and one trusted friend what is actually happening. Being specific with multiple people creates accountability across the areas of your life that addiction touches.
Look into an AA group or a Christian recovery program like Celebrate Recovery. Community is not optional in recovery from addiction; people who try to white-knuckle it alone have much lower success rates than those who go together.
Closing verse
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
- 2 Corinthians 3:17
