Temptation

I've been texting someone I'm attracted to in a way that feels like cheating, even though nothing physical has happened. Am I wrong?

Old TestamentProverbs 6:27

Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

Proverbs uses fire as a metaphor for sexual temptation with specific wisdom: proximity matters. You do not need to be burned to know you should not hold fire in your lap. The wisdom is not about what has happened yet but about the direction the current situation is heading. The time to act is before the clothes catch, not after.

New TestamentMatthew 5:28

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Jesus is not expanding the definition of sin to include every passing attraction; that would be psychologically impossible. He is addressing a cultivated, chosen gaze: a decision to linger and nurture desire that belongs somewhere else. The texting relationship you are describing is not a gray area; it is the thing Jesus is pointing at.

A path forward

  1. Stop the texting, today, not gradually. Every additional conversation deepens the attachment and makes the exit harder. The clarity you need will not come while you are still inside the situation.

  2. Tell your spouse or partner what has been happening, not to confess a physical act but because the emotional intimacy that has developed with someone else belongs in your marriage, and your spouse deserves to know where you actually are. Consider getting a counselor's or pastor's guidance on how to have that conversation well.

  3. Examine what the emotional connection was providing that felt missing. That unmet need is the real issue, and it will find another outlet if it is not addressed in the relationship where it belongs.

Closing verse

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

- Psalm 51:10-12
