Temptation

I tell small lies and exaggerate constantly. It's become a habit. Is this really a big deal?

Old TestamentProverbs 12:17

He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.

Proverbs connects truthfulness to a person's fundamental character rather than treating individual lies as isolated incidents. The consistent practice of either honesty or deception forms us into a type of person. Small lies are not small in what they are making you; they are building something in your character one instance at a time.

New TestamentColossians 3:9-10

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Paul frames lying as belonging to the old self that has been discarded at conversion. Continuing to lie is, in his framework, wearing old clothes you have already taken off. The new self is being continually renewed, which means change is possible and honesty is not simply a standard to strain toward but a nature being grown into.

A path forward

  1. Catch yourself in the act: when you exaggerate or shade the truth in a conversation, pause and correct it in real time. Say 'Actually, that was not quite right, let me be more accurate.' The discomfort of this correction is the friction that changes the habit.

  2. Ask yourself what the lie is getting you (approval, a better story, avoidance of embarrassment) and address that need directly instead. The lie is usually a symptom of something you are afraid to let others see.

  3. Practice replacing one exaggerated story this week with the plain, less impressive truth. Notice that the world does not end when you are just honest.

Closing verse

These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:
