Work & Vocation
I am completely burnt out. I still turn up and do the work, but there is nothing left in me. How do I recover?
“And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.”
Elijah collapses under a tree and asks to die, only days after the greatest public victory of his ministry. God's first response is not a rebuke or a new assignment. It is sleep, food, and then a second meal, because the journey ahead was too much for him as he was. Scripture treats physical exhaustion as a real spiritual condition.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
Jesus was speaking to ordinary Galileans carrying both hard physical labour and a religious system that added weight rather than lifting it. The invitation is to a yoke, which is still work, but paired and properly fitted rather than crushing. He offers rest for the soul specifically, which is the kind of tiredness a weekend off never quite touches.
A path forward
Book actual time off, even two days, and book it this week rather than when things calm down. They do not calm down on their own.
Get a medical check. Burnout, thyroid problems, anaemia and depression can feel identical from the inside, and a doctor can tell them apart.
Tell your pastor or one trusted Christian friend the plain truth about how empty you feel, and ask them to pray with you rather than advise you.
Closing verse
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
- Isaiah 40:31
