Work & Vocation

I want my faith to show at work, but I do not want to be the person who preaches at everyone. What does that actually look like day to day?

Old TestamentMicah 6:8

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Micah was preaching to a society with a busy religious calendar and rotten commercial practices, where people asked what offering would satisfy God while cheating each other in the market. The answer names conduct rather than ceremony. For anyone wondering how faith should show at work, the prophet starts with how you treat people and how you carry yourself.

New Testament1 Peter 3:15-16

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

Peter writes to a minority under suspicion, telling them to be ready when somebody asks about their hope. The order matters: a life that provokes the question comes first, then the answer, and even that is to be given gently and respectfully. He assumes the conversation will be started by the other person rather than launched at them.

A path forward

  1. Pick one habit people would notice without any explanation from you: never joining the gossip, always crediting other people's work, keeping your word about deadlines.

  2. Pray each morning for one named colleague. This tends to change how you see the person far more than it changes them.

  3. When someone asks about your weekend, mention church plainly, in the same tone you would mention football. Unforced honesty opens more doors than a prepared speech.

Closing verse

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

- Matthew 5:16
