Forgiveness

There is something in my past my partner does not know about. Does being honest mean I have to tell them, or would that just be to make myself feel better?

Old TestamentProverbs 28:13

He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

This proverb sets covering against confessing and attaches an outcome to each, and it belongs to a collection used to train people for public responsibility. Concealment, the writer says, corrodes the concealer. Notice that the second half is not only confession but forsaking. Israel's wisdom tradition never treated saying it out loud as the whole of the matter.

New TestamentEphesians 4:25

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Paul tells the Ephesian church to put away lying and speak truth with each other, and gives a reason that is easy to skip over: because we are members of one another. Truthfulness here is not a rule about information management. It is about what a genuinely shared life requires, which is exactly why the stakes rise with the person closest to you.

A path forward

  1. Talk to a pastor or a counsellor before you talk to your partner. Some disclosures need care in the timing and setting, and this is not a decision to make alone at midnight.

  2. Be honest with yourself about the motive: relief for you, or truth they need in order to live their life with real information. Both may be true, and it matters which one is driving.

  3. If the answer is to tell them, plan for the weeks afterwards and not just the conversation: who supports them, what changes, and what you are committing to going forward.

Closing verse

Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

- Psalm 51:6
